Eriogonum umbellatum var. modocense

Plants herbs, mats, 1–3.5 (4) dm tall, 1–3 (5) dm across; aerial flowering stems erect, 0.7–2.5 dm long, usually tomentose, without one or more foliaceous bracts about midlength; leaves in somewhat compact rosettes, the blades usually elliptic, (0.3) 1–1.5 (2) cm long, 0.1–1 (1.2) cm wide, densely tomentose abaxially, mostly glabrous and green adaxially, the margins plane; inflorescences umbellate, the branches 3–10 (15) cm long, usually tomentose, without a whorl of bracts about midlength; involucral tubes 2–3 mm long, the lobes 2–3 mm long; flowers 4–8 mm long, the perianth bright yellow.

Sandy to gravelly flats and slopes, mixed grassland and sagebrush communities, pinyon and/or juniper and montane conifer woodlands; (200) 600–2300 (2500) m; mainly east of the Cascade Range from central Oregon (Crook, Deschutes, Douglas, Grant, Harney, Jackson, Jefferson, Klamath, Lake, and Malheur cos.) south to northern California (Lassen, Modoc, Shasta, and Siskiyou cos.) hence east to northern Nevada (Humboldt and Washoe cos.) and southwestern Idaho (Camas, Gem, Goodding, Owyhee, and Twin Falls cos.).
