Description by James Reveal and Donald Mansfield in “Two new varieties of Eriogonum ovalifolium from the Intermountain West”. Plants 0.5–5 (–7) dm wide; leaf blades broadly ovate to round, 0.5–1.2 cm long, densely greenish white-tomentose, the margins occasionally brownish; scapes decumbent to prostrate, 0.3–5 cm long, mostly tomentose; inflorescences capitate, 1–2.5 cm wide, the branches absent; involucres 4–8 per cluster, 3–4.5 mm long; flowers 4–5 mm long, the perianth white to rose or red. Flowering Jun-Sep. Sandy to gravelly often worn volcanic slopes and ridges in mixed grassland and sagebrush communities; 2700–3000 m; endemic to Steens Mountain, Harney Co., Oregon.  Continue reading

Plants 2.5–4 dm wide; leaf blades usually elliptic to spatulate or oblong, (1) 3–6 cm long, tomentose to floccose, the margins rarely brownish; scapes erect, (4) 5–20 cm long, thinly tomentose; inflorescences capitate, 1–3.5 cm wide, the branches absent; involucres 3–15 per cluster, 4–5 (6.5) mm long; flowers 4–5 mm long, the perianth yellow. 2n = 40. Flowering Apr-Aug. Sandy to gravelly flats, washes, slopes, and ridges, mixed grassland, saltbush, and sagebrush communities, pinyon and/or juniper and montane conifer woodlands; 600–2600 m.

Plants 1-3 dm across. Leaf-blades elliptic or spatulate to oval, (0.3-)0.5-1.5(-2) cm; margins brownish. Scapes erect, 1-5(-7.5) cm, tomentose. Inflorescences capitate, 1-2.5 cm across. Involucres 3-10, 4-5(-6.5) mm. Flowers white to cream, 4-5 mm.
