Eriogonum lobbii

Plants herbs, compact or sprawling, matted, 0.3–3 dm tall, 1–2.5 dm across, tomentose to floccose; stems with caudex absent or nearly so, the aerial flowering stems prostrate to decumbent or weakly erect, slender or stout, solid, not fistulose, usually arising directly from a taproot, 0.5–1.5 (2) dm long, tomentose to floccose; leaves basal, in well-defined rosettes, the petioles (0.8) 1–3.5 (5) cm long, tomentose to floccose, the blades ovate to obovate or round-oval, 1–4 (5) cm long and wide, densely white- to grayish- or reddish-tomentose abaxially, less so to floccose or glabrous and greenish adaxially, the margins entire, plane; inflorescences subcapitate to umbellate or infrequently biumbellate, 1–4 cm long and wide, the branches tomentose to floccose, the bracts 3–5 at proximal node, foliaceous, 0.6–1.5 (2.5) cm long, 0.1–0.5 (0.8) cm wide, sometimes absent immediately below involucre; involucres 1 per node, turbinate-campanulate to campanulate, 5–10 (12) mm long and wide, thinly tomentose to lanate, the teeth 6–10, usually lobelike, mostly reflexed, 2–6 mm long; flowers 5–7 mm long, including a 0.1–0.4 mm long stipelike base, the perianth white to rose, glabrous, the tepals monomorphic, oblong-obovate, the stamens exserted, 5–7 mm long, the filaments pilose proximally; achenes light brown to brown, 4.5–6 mm long, glabrous. 2n = 40.

Flowering Jun-Aug. Gravelly to rocky or talus slopes, mixed grassland, buckbrush, manzanita, and sagebrush communities, montane, subalpine, or alpine conifer woodlands; (1000) 1600–3800 m; southwestern Oregon (Josephine Co.) south into the North Coast Range and the Sierra Nevada of north and eastern California (Alpine, Amador, Butte, Calaveras, El Dorado, Fresno, Glenn, Humboldt, Inyo, Lake, Madera, Mariposa, Mendocino, Mono, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sierra, Siskiyou, Tehama, Trinity and Tuolumne cos.), and west-central Nevada (Esmeralda and Washoe cos.).
