Plants herbs, spreading, annual, 1–4 (5) dm tall, glabrous, greenish to reddish-brown; stems with caudex absent, the aerial flowering stems erect, solid, not fistulose, 0.3–1 dm long, glabrous, glandular distally; leaves basal, the petioles 0.5–2.5 cm long, hirsute, slightly winged, the blades spatulate, 2–6 cm long, 0.5–2 cm wide, hirsute and greenish on both surfaces, the margins plane, often ciliate; inflorescences cymose, usually diffuse, 10–35 cm long, 10–50 cm wide, the branches not fistulose, glabrous, glandular at nodes, the bracts 3, scalelike, 1–2 mm long and wide; peduncles spreading, straight, capillary, 0.4–1.5 (2.5) cm long, glabrous or sparsely glandular at least proximally; involucres turbinate, 0.5–0.9 mm long, 0.5–0.7 mm wide, glabrous, the teeth 4, erect or nearly so, 0.3–0.5 mm long; flowers 0.5–0.9 mm long, the perianth pink to red with red midribs, puberulent, becoming white with pink to red midribs, the tepals slightly dimorphic, those of outer whorl ovate and 0.5–0.7 mm long wide, those of inner whorl oblong and 0.4–0.5 mm long wide, the stamens included, 0.5– 0.6 mm long, the filaments glabrous; achenes dark brown to blackish, trigonous, 1–1.3 mm long, glabrous.

Eriogonum baileyi var. praebens

Plants herbs, erect to spreading, 1–4 (5) dm tall, tomentose, grayish; aerial flowering stems erect, 0.5–1 dm long, tomentose; leaves basal, the petioles 0.5–3 cm long, tomentose, the blades suborbiculate, 0.5–2 cm long and wide, densely white-tomentose abaxially, mostly tomentose and grayish to greenish adaxially; inflorescences cymose, infrequently distally uniparous due to suppression of secondary branches, open to diffuse, 5–35 (45) cm long, 5–35 (4) cm wide; flowering stems tomentose; the bracts 0.5–3 mm long, 1–3 mm wide; peduncles absent; involucres somewhat appressed to branches, turbinate, 1–1.5 mm long, 0.5–1 mm wide, glabrous or tomentose, the teeth 5, erect, 0.2–0.3 mm long; inflorescence branches tomentose; flowers 1.5–2 mm long, the perianth white to rose, minutely glandular, rarely glabrous, the tepals monomorphic, oblong to oblong- obovate, somewhat constricted near middle and flaring adaxially, the stamens included, 1–1.5 mm long, the filaments pilose proximally; achenes brown, trigonous, 1–1.5 mm long.

Eriogonum microthecum var. cyclophyllum

I discovered this new variety, Eriogonum microthecum var. cyclophyllum, on July 23 th 2014 – north of Mount Shasta north of Highway 97. Once, taking the A12 cut-off to Yreka, I told Sofy, my wife, that I was sure there was a treasure around there to discover. Another day, going back home, I took some dirt roads from A12 and yes, I discovered a huge population of Eriogonum microthecum.
